Overview

This blend pairs two heptapeptides developed in Russia that share a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro motif. Semax (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) is studied mainly for neurotrophin signaling and ischemic brain injury. Selank (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) is studied mainly for anxiolytic-like and immunomodulatory activity. Several papers have examined both peptides side by side, in separate treatment groups, in enzyme assays, rodent behavior, and human brain imaging. No indexed study has tested them as a combined preparation, so interactions, additive effects, and the pharmacology of a blend are unknown.

Class: Blend of two synthetic regulatory heptapeptides

Mechanism of action

How the compound acts, as described in the literature.

  1. Semax: in rats, raised hippocampal BDNF and trkB expression and trkB phosphorylation, and altered immune- and vascular-related gene expression after focal cerebral ischemia.

  2. Selank: inhibits enkephalin-degrading enzymes in plasma in vitro and altered GABAergic neurotransmission gene expression in rat frontal cortex.

  3. In a single in vitro study, both peptides inhibited enkephalin-degrading enzymes from human serum, with Semax somewhat more potent than Selank.

  4. No study has examined pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic interactions between the two peptides.

Published research

Selected studies, each linked to its PubMed record. Summaries describe what the studies reported.

Evidence & safety

What the research does not show, and the adverse events and regulatory status it reports.

The combination has never been studied, so interactions, combined effects, and safety are unknown; the studies listed tested each peptide separately. Evidence for each component is mostly small-sample work from Russian groups, and neither peptide is approved by the FDA or EMA.
