BPC-157

Also known as Body Protection Compound 157, PL 14736, Bepecin

BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. It is studied mainly in rodent models of tendon, muscle, gastrointestinal and vascular injury.

Overview

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157) was described in the early 1990s by Predrag Sikirić's group at the University of Zagreb as a partial sequence of a larger gastric juice protein. Its sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, and the originating group reports that it is stable in gastric juice. Most published work is rodent research on gastrointestinal lesions, tendon and ligament transection, muscle injury and vascular occlusion, much of it from that same group. Human data are limited to three small uncontrolled studies. BPC-157 is not an approved drug, and the World Anti-Doping Agency lists it as a prohibited substance.

Class: Synthetic gastric pentadecapeptide

Mechanism of action

How the compound acts, as described in the literature.

  1. In rat tendon explants and fibroblasts, BPC-157 accelerated outgrowth and increased cell survival under oxidative stress and cell migration, with greater FAK and paxillin phosphorylation, without changing proliferation.

  2. In endothelial cells and a rat hind-limb ischemia model, it increased VEGFR2 expression and internalization and activated VEGFR2–Akt–eNOS signaling, alongside higher vessel density and faster blood-flow recovery.

  3. Rodent studies from the originating group report that it modulates the nitric oxide system, counteracting effects of both the NOS inhibitor L-NAME and the NO precursor L-arginine in several models.

  4. In cultured tendocytes, it reversed growth inhibition caused by the lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxynonenal.

Evidence & safety

What the research does not show, and the adverse events and regulatory status it reports.

Nearly all evidence comes from rodent and cell studies, much of it from a single research group, and independent replication is limited. A 2026 systematic review found only three small uncontrolled human studies, rated very low certainty; no drug-related adverse events were reported, but human safety has not been established. Reviews also raise a theoretical concern that its pro-angiogenic activity could support tumor growth; BPC-157 is unapproved and prohibited in sport by WADA.
